So, that’s clear we hope! Let’s continue to our list of 6 pilsener that are not boring at all: 1. Got it? On the page about pilsener and lager we explain more about this type of beer. Pilsner is lager, but lager is not always pilsner. Pils, or pilsner, is part of this term and therefore also called ‘lager’. Lager is an umbrella term for bottom-fermented beers. You can recognize pilsner by its golden yellow color and it’s slightly less bitter flavors than craft beer. This is the 'ordinary beer' according to the Dutchies (or Hollanders). Pilsner is the most popular beer in the Netherlands and most people order this type of beer in a bar or restaurant. What is pilsner?īefore we move on to pilsner, also known as pilsener or pils, it is good to explain what pilsner is exactly. On the basis of 6 different pilsners, we prove the contrary and tell you why a 'normal' pilsner or ‘regular’ beer is not boring at all. But is that really the case? If you say: a pilsner is boring and simple, we'll stop you right away. The regular (or common) beer we drink is perhaps too basic’ for many people? The lager, pilsen beer or pilsner, seems simple. It is possible that you asked this question more than once when you were ordering a drink at a bar or restaurant. Brilliant idea, if you ask me.‘I would like a beer please’. Yes, it was my idea to add a Bohemian-style Pilsner to BJ’s seasonal lineup this year. Even better, this summer I can satisfy my craving every day thanks to BJ’s Enchantress TM Golden Pilsner. My saving grace is that there are a handful of American craft brewers who brew a pretty damn good Bohemian-style Pilsner, especially when I buy it fresh at the brewery. And drinking imported Czech Pilsner is always a letdown because this style of beer needs to be fresh and unpasteurized to maintain that fantastic hop flavor. What frustrates me about this style I crave so much is that it’s so hard to find a true-to-style Bohemian Pilsner outside of the Czech Republic. No wonder the Czechs drink more beer per capita than anyone else! Well-balanced between malt and hops, and as smooth as lager gets.

Then sip and savor the perfectly balanced flavors across your tongue-sweet pale malt flavor up front, bready malt flavor and spicy hop notes in the middle of the palate, followed by a crisp and smooth hop bitter finish. Then the nose-Saaz hops! Pleasantly spicy, herbal, earthy and slightly grassy. The experience starts with your eyes-the beautiful golden color and frothy head. Every town I visited had a brewery with a signature Pilsner, and the vast majority I tasted were exceptional. When I first visited the Czech Republic about 25 years ago, I discovered what Pilsner is all about.

I’m talking about the real deal-Bohemian Pilsner. To be clear, I’m not talking about the watered-down Pilsners that dominate the world. But it’s safe to say that Pilsner is the style of beer that I crave most often. As a brewer and major consumer of beer, I’m often asked, “What’s your favorite kind of beer?” That’s not an easy question to answer because it depends on the season, time of day, what I’m eating and my mood more than anything.
